005 – Home & Away

Posted: July 1, 2011 in Uncategorized

Hello again to all you lovely music lovers.

This week I’ve got 3 bands for you to check out – and I think you’ll already be aware of @ least one of these fabulous acts…

First up I have something a little different for you.
So far my “eclectic electronica & alternative picks” have yet to feature anything that’s not firmly based in the wonderful world of ‘electronica’, so here is a new ‘alternative’ act… London-based, Piper Saint.
Front woman Uxia Santos, was born in Spain and moved to London 6 years ago. Determined to make something of her musical talents she has been working with various folk ever since. Having had a few line up changes, Piper Saint have now emerged and Uxia is joined by the very talented Jason Sayeed (Lead Guitar & Backing Vox), Mark Hudson (Bass) and David Mather (Drums). Already, Piper Saint seem to be creating a bit of a buzz playing in and around London as well as gathering fans in Uxia’s home country of Spain.
Their first EP is due out this summer (2011), recorded at Pinewood Studios with producer Joe Rubel (he has also recently worked with the excellent Shadowboxer).

I love the understated power in the opening of this track and catchy chorus. Following my much favoured quiet-loud-quiet model of songwriting, this track has been stuck in my head for days now, so I hope you enjoy it too.

Next up is Edinburgh based, American born gothic/electronic artist, Hannah Edington a.k.a.The Batonist. I first discovered her about a year ago and have since watched this young girl with an amazing voice (and too many ideas for her own good), blossom into the artist she is now. First release “The Dearly Departed” is a strange mix of dark synth sounds & even darker lyrics and so far this year, she has self-released 2 further EPs; “Bats, Rats and Kitty Kats” in Feb. and “Cynicisms of Times Past” in April, as well as kick starting the year with the free download single “Nothing Left” in Jan. – get it here http://thebatonist.bandcamp.com/track/nothing-left
I (Sacre Noir) was lucky enough to support Hannah at the launch night of the most recent EP, and genuinely feel it’s her best work to date (but with all these ideas kicking round I have no doubt there’s much more to come). Her live show that night was compelling; one of Edinburgh’s coolest looking “Punk” chicks, dressed in frilly knickers & a basque, and for company she has her laptop, some glitter and a weird-looking doll on a chain.

The Batonist

The Batonist - live @ Sneaky Pete's

My favourite track on the new EP is “Seven Sins” – it’s riddled with the sounds synonymous with The Batonist – dark and sinister, distorted bells and lo-fi production.
If you make friends with her on facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Batonist/162849253737639 and ask nicely she’ll send you a code for a FREE live EP too.

And finally, based in Gothenburg (home of everything cool) are Little Dragon.
Fronted by Swedish/Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano, who provides both vocals & percussion
Yukimi is joined in Little Dragon by old friends Erik Bodin on drums (Erik also plays percussion with José González), Fredrik Källgren Wallin on bass and Håkan Wirenstrand on keyboards. You may already know the band from their work with The Gorillaz on the album and tour ‘Escape to Plastic Beach’.
Their first release was a double A-side 7″ single “Twice”/”Test”, (Off The Wall) way back in 2006. The following year they released their debut self-titled (Peacefrog Records) and their second album, Machine Dreams followed in 2009.
Check out their new single Ritual Union, due for release in the UK on July 26 2011 @

This is footage from Sonar June 2011.
Electro-pop-tastic! It’s got all the right summertime vibes and the lightness of instrumentation allows the vocals to be subtle and direct.

You can hear me DJ some of the tracks featured in this & other blogs @ 2 FREE night’s in Belushi’s Bar, Edinburgh…
TONIGHT – Friday 1st July 2011
NEXT WEEK – Friday 8th July 2011
