015 – Sacre Noir Summer Tour (Paris Break Days)

August 22nd & 23rd 2011, Paris

A couple of really nice days off in Paris!
First stop on Monday was fabric shopping in Montmartre and then coffee near Sacre Coeur. Whilst we were in London I saw the Banksy movie ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ and was really keen to get some more shots of the amazing graffiti in Paris. Last time we were here we saw some Jeff Aerosol and Invader pieces, so this time I’m on the look out for some more.
It’s really nice in Paris; if you are caught trying to steal or deface the Invader tiles then the police will prosecute. It’s definitely seen as a ‘higher’ art form and much more than just ‘tagging’. Think my new favourite is Zona Yarost.

The afternoon was spent wandering around the Place De La Republique taking in Centre Cultural Pompidou, Arts Et Metiers and all the sights and sounds of this wonderful city. We ate by Laumiere in a fantastic Italian restaurant – really simple food done very well indeed… cheesy pasta has never tasted so good!
In the evening there was a crazy lightning storm that lasted about an hour but it never seemed to rain enough to clear the air.

Tuesday was another very warm day, reaching 35 degrees and I’m starting to feel the effects of the heat. I seemed to be very tired all day, which was a good excuse to take lots of mini breaks for water and rest in the many parks around town. We made it to the Champs Elysees after a lunch –time picnic in the Jardin du Luxembourg, and had a look in Fnac (record shop). These are both ‘must-do’ things whenever we’re in Paris. The Jardin du Luxembourg was as beautiful as ever, full of amazing flowers and little boats in the pond.

Fnac is just like HMV but they have loads of Brigitte Bardot & Johnny Hallyday records with the most amazing cover art. I could spend a day just looking round all the different sections but that maybe just comes from years of working in record shops. The heat is just too much for me and after about 4pm I’m beat. We headed back to the hostel so I could have a wee sleep before heading out for tea.
We are very lucky to be meeting up with some family friends who live in Paris for food tonight; Raphael, his wife Elizabeth (who is an amazing cook) and his sister Fanny. We eat traditional cuisine from the south of France where Elizabeth’s family originate. It was by far the nicest evening of the trip so far. Raphael stays at the opposite end of the canal from our accommodation so we take a stroll along for 7.30pm and meet baby Abel (he’s 16 months now so not so much a baby, but very cute indeed) and catch up with the grown ups before we eat. Excellent food and wine as well as great company!
